2:1

Καὶ εἰσελθὼν πάλιν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ δι’ ἡμερῶν ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἐν οἴκῳ ἐστίν
kai eiselthōn palin eis Kapharnaoum di’ hēmerōn ēkousthē hoti en oikō estin
And having entered again for Capernaum after [some] days it was heard - in [the] house He is

2:2

καὶ συνήχθησαν πολλοὶ ὥστε μηκέτι χωρεῖν μηδὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν θύραν ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον
kai synēchthēsan polloi hōste mēketi chōrein mēde ta pros tēn thyran elalei autois ton logon
And were gathered together many so as no longer to have space not even the to the door He was speaking to them the matter

2:3

Καὶ ἔρχονται φέροντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων
kai erchontai pherontes pros auton paralytikon airomenon hypo tessarōn
And they come bringing to him a paralytic being carried by four

3And they come carrying toward him a paralytic lifted by four.

2:4

καὶ μὴ δυνάμενοι προσενέγκαι αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον ἀπεστέγασαν τὴν στέγην ὅπου ἦν ἐξορύξαντες χαλῶσι κράβαττον ὁ παραλυτικὸς κατέκειτο
kai mē dynamenoi prosenenkai autō dia ton ochlon apestegasan tēn stegēn hopou ēn exoryxantes chalōsi krabatton ho paralytikos katekeito
And not being able to come near to Him on account of the crowd they removed the roof where was having broken up [it] they let down pallet - paralytic was laying sick

4And not being able to bring to him because of the crowd, they unroofed the roof where he was; having opened it up, they let down the mat; the paralytic was lying sick.

2:5

Καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ Τέκνον ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι
kai idōn ho Iēsous tēn pistin autōn legei tō paralytikō Teknon aphientai sou hai hamartiai
And having seen - Jesus the faith of them He says - paralytic Son are forgiven of You the sins

5And Jesus having seen their faith says to the paralytic, Child, your sins are forgiven.

2:6

Ἦσαν δέ τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐκεῖ καθήμενοι καὶ διαλογιζόμενοι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν
ēsan de tines tōn grammateōn ekei kathēmenoi kai dialogizomenoi en tais kardiais autōn
Were now some of the scribes there sitting And reasoning in - hearts of them

6Now some of the scribes were there, sitting and reasoning in their hearts.

2:7

Τί οὗτος οὕτως λαλεῖ; βλασφημεῖ τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ Θεός;
Ti houtos houtōs lalei blasphēmei tis dynatai aphienai hamartias ei mē heis ho Theos
What this [man] thus does speak? He blasphemes who is able to forgive sins if not alone - God?

7Why does he speak this way? He blasphemes. Who is able to send away sins if not God alone?

2:8

Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐπιγνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
kai euthys epignous ho Iēsous tō pneumati autou hoti houtōs dialogizontai en heautois legei autois Ti tauta dialogizesthe tais kardiais hymōn
And immediately having known - Jesus - a spirit of Him’” - thus they are reasoning in themselves He says to them What these things reason you - hearts of you?

8And immediately Jesus having discerned in his spirit that they are reasoning in this way within themselves, he says to them, Why do you reason these things in your hearts?

2:9

τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ Ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἢ Ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν περιπάτει;
ti estin eukopōteron eipein tō paralytikō Aphientai sou hai hamartiai ē Egeire kai aron ton krabatton peripatei
Which is easier: to say - paralytic Are forgiven of You the sins or Arise And take up the mat walk

9What is easier to say to the paralytic, "Your sins are sent away" or "Get up and pick up your mat, walk."
† If the second command is taken in the sense of walking an upright and moral life, then not only is Jesus saying the paralytic's sins are forgiven, but that he should live an upstanding and virtuous life. A similar sending away of sins and command to sin no more is found in John 8:11 where Jesus saves the prostitute from being stoned.

2:10

ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ««ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας» ⇔ ««ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς»— λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ
hina de eidēte hoti exousian echei ho Huios tou anthrōpou aphienai hamartias epi tēs gēs legei tō paralytikō
so that however you might know - authority has - Son of the of Man to forgive sins on - earth He says - paralytic

10But so that you may know that the Son of man has authority to send away sins on earth, he says to the paralytic,

2:11

Σοὶ λέγω ἔγειρε ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς οἶκόν
Soi legō egeire aron ton krabatton sou kai hypage eis oikon
To you I say arise take up the mat of You And go for home

11To you I say, "Get up, pick up your mat and go home."

2:12

Καὶ ἠγέρθη καὶ εὐθὺς ἄρας τὸν κράβαττον ἐξῆλθεν ἔμπροσθεν πάντων ὥστε ἐξίστασθαι πάντας δοξάζειν Θεὸν λέγοντας ὅτι Οὕτως οὐδέποτε εἴδομεν*
kai ēgerthē kai euthys aras ton krabatton exēlthen emprosthen pantōn hōste existasthai pantas doxazein Theon legontas hoti Houtōs oudepote eidomen
And he arose And immediately having taken up the pallet it came forth before all so as to be amazed all to glorify God saying - Thus never did we see

2:13

Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πάλιν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς
kai exēlthen palin para tēn thalassan kai pas ho ochlos ērcheto pros auton edidasken autous
And it came forth again by the Sea And all - crowd was coming to Him He was teaching them

13And he went out again beside the sea and all the crowd was coming to him; he was teaching them.

2:14

Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν Λευὶν τὸν τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀκολούθει μοι ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν
kai paragōn eiden Leuin ton tou Halphaiou kathēmenon epi to telōnion kai legei autō Akolouthei moi anastas ēkolouthēsen
And passing he saw Levi the of the of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth And He says to Him Follow Me having risen up he followed

2:15

Καὶ γίνεται κατακεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ πολλοὶ τελῶναι ἁμαρτωλοὶ συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ τοῖς μαθηταῖς ἦσαν γὰρ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ
kai ginetai katakeisthai auton en tē oikia autou kai polloi telōnai hamartōloi synanekeinto tō Iēsou tois mathētais ēsan gar ēkolouthoun autō
And it came to pass reclining him in the house of Him’” And many tax collectors sinners were reclining with - of Jesus on the disciples they were for they were following to Him

15And it came to pass he reclined at his house and many sinful tax collectors were reclining with Jesus; they were being the disciples for they were following him.

2:16

καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν Φαρισαίων ἰδόντες ὅτι ἐσθίει μετὰ ἁμαρτωλῶν τελωνῶν ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Ὅτι ἐσθίει;
kai hoi grammateis tōn Pharisaiōn idontes hoti esthiei meta hamartōlōn telōnōn elegon tois mathētais autou Hoti esthiei
And - scribes of the Pharisees having seen - eating with sinners tax collectors were saying on the disciples of Him’” Why does He eat?”

2:17

Καὶ ἀκούσας ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς ‹ὅτι› Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλ’ κακῶς ἔχοντες οὐκ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους ἀλλὰ ἁμαρτωλούς
kai akousas ho Iēsous legei autois hoti Ou chreian echousin hoi ischyontes iatrou all’ kakōs echontes ouk ēlthon kalesai dikaious alla hamartōlous
And having heard - Jesus He says to them - No need have - being strong of a physician but sick being not they came to call [the] righteous But sinners

2:18

Καὶ ἦσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύοντες ἔρχονται λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Διὰ τί τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν δὲ σοὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
kai ēsan hoi mathētai Iōannou kai Pharisaioi nēsteuontes erchontai legousin autō Dia ti tōn Pharisaiōn nēsteuousin de soi ou nēsteuousin
And they were - disciples John And Pharisees fasting they come they speak to Him Because of Which of the Pharisees fast however You not fast?

18And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting; they come [and] say to him, Why do the [disciples] of the Pharisees fast but yours not fast?

2:19

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν ᾧ νυμφίος μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νηστεύειν; ὅσον χρόνον ἔχουσιν τὸν νυμφίον οὐ νηστεύειν
kai eipen autois ho Iēsous Mē dynantai hoi huioi tou nymphōnos en hō nymphios met’ autōn estin nēsteuein hoson chronon echousin ton nymphion ou nēsteuein
And said to them - Jesus Not are able - sons of the bridechamber in which bridegroom with of them is to fast? As long as time have the bridegroom not to fast

19And Jesus said to them, The sons of the bridechamber in which the bridegroom is with them are not able to fast; as long a time as they have the bridegroom [they] do not fast.

2:20

ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ
eleusontai de hēmerai hotan aparthē ap’ autōn ho nymphios kai tote nēsteusousin en ekeinē tē hēmera
Will come however [the] days when will have been taken away from of them - bridegroom And then they will fast in those the days

2:21

Οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπιράπτει ἐπὶ ἱμάτιον παλαιόν εἰ δὲ μή αἴρει τὸ πλήρωμα ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ καινὸν τοῦ παλαιοῦ καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται
Oudeis epiblēma rhakous agnaphou epiraptei epi himation palaion ei de mē airei to plērōma ap’ autou kainon tou palaiou kai cheiron schisma ginetai
No one a patch of cloth unshrunk sews at clothing old if however not tears away the patch from of Him’” new of the old And worse a tear it came to pass

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on [an] old robe, but if [so] it removes [the] new fullness of the old and a worse split happens.

2:22

Καὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς εἰ δὲ μή ῥήξει ὁ οἶνος τοὺς ἀσκούς καὶ ἀπόλλυται οἱ ἀσκοί ἀλλὰ καινούς
kai oudeis ballei oinon neon eis askous palaious ei de mē rhēxei ho oinos tous askous kai apollytai hoi askoi alla kainous
And no one puts wine new for wineskins old if however not will burst - wine the wineskins And will be destroyed - wineskins But new”

2:23

Καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς σάββασιν παραπορεύεσθαι διὰ τῶν σπορίμων καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἤρξαντο ὁδὸν ποιεῖν τίλλοντες τοὺς στάχυας
kai egeneto auton en tois sabbasin paraporeuesthai dia tōn sporimōn kai hoi mathētai autou ērxanto hodon poiein tillontes tous stachyas
And it came to pass him in on the Sabbaths is passing on account of of the grainfields And - disciples of Him’” began way to make plucking the heads of grain

23And it happened on the sabbaths he is passing through the fields and his disciples began to make a way plucking the heads of grain.

2:24

καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Ἴδε τί ποιοῦσιν τοῖς σάββασιν ὃ οὐκ ἔξεστιν;
kai hoi Pharisaioi elegon autō Ide ti poiousin tois sabbasin ho ouk exestin
And - Pharisees were saying to Him Behold Which do they on the Sabbaths that which not is lawful?

2:25

Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησεν Δαυὶδ ὅτε χρείαν ἔσχεν καὶ ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ;
kai legei autois Oudepote anegnōte ti epoiēsen Dauid hote chreian eschen kai epeinasen autos hoi met’ autou
And He says to them Never did you read Which did David when need he had And hungered He - with him?

2:26

πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ Ἀβιαθὰρ ἀρχιερέως καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστιν φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ ἱερεῖς ἔδωκεν τοῖς σὺν αὐτῷ οὖσιν;
pōs eisēlthen eis ton oikon tou Theou epi Abiathar archiereōs kai tous artous tēs protheseōs ephagen hous ouk exestin phagein ei mē hiereis edōken tois syn autō ousin

Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τὸ σάββατον διὰ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐγένετο καὶ οὐχ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τὸ
kai elegen autois To sabbaton dia ton anthrōpon egeneto kai ouch ho anthrōpos to
And He said to them The Sabbath on account of the man it came to pass And not - a man the

2:28

ὥστε κύριός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ σαββάτου
hōste kyrios estin ho Huios tou anthrōpou kai sabbatou
so as Lord is - Son of the of Man And Sabbath
